As Kolkata observes its first International Day of Yoga after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come to power in the state following the recently concluded assembly elections, the city’s iconic Red Road and its adjoining areas have greared up for a week of traffic restrictions owing to the event’s preparations.
According to a traffic advisory issued by the Kolkata Commissioner of Police, Red Road will remain closed for all vehicular movement from 10 pm on June 14 to June 21 due to preparations for the mega event.

The traffic guideline said that movement of all types of goods vehicles would be restricted along AJC Bose Road towards south from its crossing with Lenin Sarani (Moulali crossing), St. Georges Gate Road, Strand Road up to Raja Woodmunt Street, along CR Avenue from G C Avenue towards south, all along JL Nehru Road (both bound) from 2 am on June 21 till the programme is over.
Guru Nanak Sarani (Mayo Road) will remain closed for all vehicular traffic, except cars with stickers especially issued for the programme, from 2 am on June 21 to till the programme is over.
In addition to this, several other stretches will be closed from 2 am on June 21 till the Yoga day program, including Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, Gostha Pal Sarani (Kingsway), Queensway, Plassey Gate Road, Dufferin Road, Outram Road, Esplanade Ramp, among some others.
The traffic advisory further stated that vehicular traffic may also be diverted from any of the arterial roads and feeder roads by the traffic police on duty.
